ACDelco 6T40 (-30, -35, -45, -50)
The Hydra-Matic 6T40, better known as GM GF6, is a 6-speed automatic transmission that debuted in 2008 to be installed in some of General Motor’s medium and compact models. For all versions, from 6T30 to 6T60, the transaxle design ensures remarkable compactness, ideal for both front and four-wheel drive applications.
The new ‘transaxle’ design, with a torque converter clutch and an electronically controlled auxiliary oil pump, allows the gears to be located on the same centre line as the drive shaft. Thanks to three planetary gears with one fixed and one rotating clutch pack, this transmission embraces clutch-clutch technology and eliminates cumbersome free-wheel mechanisms. This transmission also differs from the 6T30 in the use of heavier components, which allows it to handle higher torque motors.
Here again, the modification of the parameters will lead to a reduction in shifting time, increasing performance and fluidity of gear changes, especially at low revs.
Bosch DQ381
If maximum performance was achieved with the DQ500, the natural evolution of technology led the VW group to design the DQ381. The keywords are economy and lightness. This small-sized gearbox is installed on the MQB platform (Audi, Seat, Skoda, Volkswagen), to provide traction, primarily, to the highest-performance 2.0 turbo-petrol engines with an eye on fuel consumption.
Developed to support a torque value of 420Nm, on both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, it is capable of further increasing its values. The two clutches in oil bath and the same technology as the parent DQ500 (primary and secondary shafts handling odd and even gears) already allow speed and driving comfort in the stock configuration.
By modifying the parameters, a reduction in shifting time at lower REVS will be tangible, exponentially increasing the performances and fluidity of gear changes.
Continental DPS6
The Ford PowerShift transmission is among the most advanced six-speed dual-clutch transmissions from the American manufacturer and can improve fuel efficiency by up to 10 per cent compared to a conventional automatic transmission. Installed mainly on small and medium-sized cars with front-wheel drive, it has two modes: with dry clutches or in oil bath, depending on the application.
As with DSG gearboxes, the even ratio is managed by a primary shaft and the odd ratio by a secondary shaft, each with its own clutch pack driven by an ingenious electro-hydraulic system. Once again, the need to reduce overall dimensions, masses and consequently fuel consumption, guarantees a high level of performance across the entire operating range.
With a maximum torque value of 250Nm, it will be necessary to act cautiously on the calibration, especially when modifying the limiters. Thanks to the cloning possibility of this TCU, however, it is possible to intervene on a broad spectrum, and not only in terms of performance.
